A Film About Joe Brainard

This event has already taken place.

Host: ICA and Notting Hill Editions
Location: ICA, The Mall, London SW1Y 5AH
Speaker: Mark Ford

Joe Brainard’s I Remember is a cult classic, envied and admired by writers from Frank O’Hara to John Ashbery and Edmund White. As autobiography, Brainard’s method was brilliantly simple: to set down specific memories as they rose to the surface of his consciousness, each prefaced by the refrain ‘I remember’. Forty-two years after its original US publication in 1970, this is the first UK edition.

To mark the release of the book, Notting Hill Editions presents Matt Wolf's short film I Remember: A Film About Joe Brainard. His archival montage combines audio recordings of Brainard reading from the book, as well as an interview with his lifelong friend and collaborator, the poet Ron Padgett. The result is an inventive biography of Joe Brainard, and an elliptical dialog about friendship, nostalgia, and the strange wonders of memory.

The screening will be introduced by poet Mark Ford, Professor of English at University College London. His anthology London: A History in Verse was published in 2012. A discussion will follow featuring Mark Ford and guests.
