Host: The Idler
Location: St Stephen’s Church Hall, Talbot Road, W2 5QT
Speaker: Alexander Armstrong, Tom Hodgkinson
The warm and witty comedian Alexander Armstrong is a multi-talented chap; as well as being a comedian and writer, he is a talented singer and classically trained oboe player.
Tonight he’ll be entertaining Idler audiences with chat and music from his new album, Upon a Different Shore, a lovely collection of some of Armstrong’s favourite songs, including compositions by Vaughan Williams, The Stranglers and David Gilmour.
Armstrong will sign copies of his LP after the talk. And there will be G&Ts for everyone.
Alexander Armstrong is a successful comedian, actor, writer and television presenter who was born and raised near Pauperhaugh, near Rothbury in Northumberland. At 16 he went to Durham School on a music scholarship and then on to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied English. Alexander is best-known as one half of the comedy duo Armstrong and Miller who starred in four series of ARMSTRONG AND MILLER and THE ARMSTRONG AND MILLER SHOW. He has hosted the BBC series HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU more than 20 times and has co-presented the hugely popular TV quiz show POINTLESS, alongside Richard Osman since 2009. In 2011, Alexander became President of The Literary and Philosophical Society of Newcastle upon Tyne and, as one of its four patrons, launched their million pound appeal to sustain its long-term future.
In 2015, having already published three books, two more hit the shelves, THE A-Z OF POINTLESS, co-authored with Richard Osman and LAND OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN, in which Alexander documented his preparations and the adventures had during his two-month trip to the Arctic for ITV. In addition to this, 2015 saw Alexander release a classical album, A YEAR OF SONGS, which topped the Classical Music charts, and peaked at #6 in the music album charts. November sees Alexander release his second album, UPON A DIFFERENT SHORE.
