It’s amazing to think that, at one time, the sun never set on the British Empire. At its height in 1922, it held sway over about 500 million people, a fifth of the world’s population, and over thirteen million square miles, a quarter of its land mass. That was less than a century ago and the repercussions of its loss continue to shape British society today.
Jeremy Paxman will be discussing these themes in a talk that will be both entertaining and informative.
The Empire’s influence is everywhere, from the very existence of the United Kingdom to the ethnic composition of our cities. It affects everything, from Prime Ministers’ decisions to send troops to war to the adventurers we admire, from the sports we think we excel in to the architecture of our buildings.More Information
