John Wilson Foster's newest book Pilgrims of the Air is a definitive account, painstakingly researched and beautifully written, of the life and demise of the passenger pigeon which became extinct 100 years ago.

Celebrated poet Michael Longley will join with us to discuss this fascinating subject.

John Wilson Foster has been a keen birdwatcher since the age of thirteen, at first around Northern Ireland and then Ireland and England, and between 1974 and 2008 chiefly in Canada with birding trips to Oregon, Arizona and Utah.

He became intrigued by the extraordinary life and strange death of the passenger pigeon as far back as 1990.

He is a freelance writer and literary critic and an honorary research fellow at Queen's University Belfast. He has published three books on RMS Titanic and twelve other books on Irish, English and American literature, natural history, and Irish culture.
