The first Literary Friendships event of our World Literature Series will bring together Colm Tóibín with his friend the writer László Krasznahorkai. Described by the Guardian as a ‘visionary writer’, Krasznahorkai’s novel, Satantango, first published in Hungary in 1985 and now regarded as a classic, was finally published in English this year, translated from Hungarian by George Szirtes.
Krasznahorkai has a three-decade-long collaboration with film director Béla Tarr, who made of Satantango a seven-and-a-half hour long meditative epic depicting a dying collectivist town.
