Mario Vargas Llosa

This event has already taken place.

Host: British Academy
Location: The Royal Society, Carlton House Terrace
Speaker: Mario Vargas Llosa in conversation with Efraín Kristal and Michael Wood

Mario Vargas Llosa is one of the world’s greatest contemporary novelists, a playwright of distinction, and a leading public intellectual. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2010. He will be discussing his latest novel, The Dream of the Celt, to be published by Faber and Faber in June 2012.

This novel deals with key moments in the life of the Irish nationalist, Roger Casement – especially his denunciation of human rights abuses in the Congo and in the Peruvian Amazon – as he awaits execution for treason in 1916. Mario Vargas Llosa will also consider his work in a broader context by exploring issues raised in The Cambridge Companion to Mario Vargas Llosa, edited by Efraín Kristal and John King.

This ‘In Conversation’ event will be followed by the launch of the English translation of The Dream of the Celt.
