Speaker: Marco Roth, Keith Gessen, Christian Lorentzen
New York-based literary magazine n+1 was launched in the Autumn of 2004 by Keith Gessen, Benjamin Kunkel, Mark Greif, Chad Harbach, and Marco Roth. Dissatisfied with the American intellectual scene and its ‘demented self-censorship’, the editors cited as their model for the new venture the early years of Partisan Review and Lingua Franca. In the eight years since then, the magazine’s controversial take on politics, culture and society has made it one of the most criticized, lauded and generally talked about periodicals of the new century. Christian Lorentzen, senior editor at the LRB, was involved right at the start, as he describes in his foreword to a new anthology of writings from n+1 published by Notting Hill Editions, the title of which is taken from the closing words of the magazine’s first issue: ‘it is time to say what you mean.’ Two n+1 editors, Keith Gessen and Marco Roth, will be joining Christian at the college for a discussion about magazines, literature, n+1, and youthful ambition.
