It is the eternal question. All those wars, inquisitions, pogroms and massacres in the name of one God or another versus Christianity’s universal message of love or the civilizing influence of organized religion. The entire population of Beziers was slaughtered in the name of God and the Thirty Years War left a quarter of Europe dead. And yet the Jesuits created an earthly paradise in the jungles of Brazil and the Caliphs of Baghdad took civilization and learning to new peaks. Intelligence Squared has been holding such debates in London for some years and we are delighted to be able to welcome them at this year’s Festival. Come and listen, have your say and have your vote.

Chaired by Edward Stourton, and with some heavyweight historians and intellectuals on both sides of the fence, this will be a highly thought-provoking and toughly contested debate.
