Host: Colston Hall
Location: The Lantern, Colston Hall, Colston Street, Bristol BS1 5AR
Speaker: Stephen Johnson
In advance of our publication of Stephen Johnson's book How Shostakovich Changed My Mind, Stephen presents an insight into a number of selected pieces by Shostakovich, performed by The English Piano Trio at The Colston Hall in Bristol.
Shostakovich’s haunting and haunted Op. 67 is a valedictory work remembering a close friend. But interior lament turns to universal indignation as the finale recalls concentration camp victims forced to dance beside their newly-prepared graves.
"Stephen Johnson is not merely the most engaging broadcaster, but with his encyclopaedic knowledge of classical music he makes natural connections between different composers and their music which continue to entrance and enthuse musicians and non-musicians alike." – Robert Winston
The English Piano Trio has been delighting audiences for over twenty years with their interpretation of the classical repertory, in the UK and abroad. The Trio also promotes contemporary music through commissioning, performing and recording new works, such as those of David Matthews and Roger Steptoe, among others.
