The Importance of History

This event has already taken place.

Host: Chalke Valley History Festival
Location: Ebbesborne Wake, Wiltshire SP5 5JH
Speaker: Michael Gove, Tristram Hunt, Dominic Sandbrook

Of all the subjects in the school curriculum, few are more controversial than history. A decade and more after Tony Blair’s government attempted to brand Britain as a “young country”, the issues that have shaped the grand sweep of our past – issues of security and personal freedom, of identity and dissidence – are once again, and most urgently, under focus. Simultaneously, there is mounting anxiety that history, in schools at least, is becoming ever more marginalised – and that even when it is taught, students are getting nothing much beyond wall-to-wall Tudors and Hitler.

Dominic Sandbrook chairs a discussion between Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Education, and Tristram Hunt, historian and Labour MP, with the aim of exploring what – if anything – the politician’s take on history should be.
