Writing the City

This event has already taken place.

Location: 37 rue de la Bûcherie 75005 Paris
Speaker: Jon Day, Lara Feigel, and Lauren Elkin

Since Baudelaire sauntered around Paris, writing the city into being in his notebooks, the flâneur has become a popular figure in the literary imagination. More recently, the flâneur has been joined by the psychogeographer, in search of new ways to write about the relationship between the mind and its physical environment. Why has the journey become so prevalent as a way of structuring non-fiction, and how did the form develop? What is the relationship between writing and journeying? How do writers create stories from maps? Here to answer these questions will be Jon Day, author of Cyclogeography: Journeys of a London Bicycle Courier, Lara Feigel, author of The Love-charm of Bombs: Restless Lives in the Second World War, and Lauren Elkin, author of the forthcoming Flâneuse: Essays in Wandering.
